Hinckley & Rugby Building Society has raised awareness and funds for local mental health charity, Lamp, thanks to a week of step-counting activities as part the charity’s ‘5K to the Moon’ campaign for Mental Health Awareness week.
The week-long campaign, which ran from 9-15 May, saw Society staff take part in a variety of activities throughout the week to reach a 5K target, including walking, running and cycling. The campaign was set following the success of the charity’s ‘Around the World’ challenge last year, which had an aim of reaching the circumference of the earth by combining all participants’ 5K’s. This year’s campaign had astronomical heights – with the charity hoping to have enough participants to reach the moon!
More than 40 of the Society’s staff took part, and between them managed to reach 2,716, 883 steps. As an extra incentive to ‘step up’, the Society’s Chief Executive, Colin Fyfe pledged to donate 10 pence for every 1,500 steps completed, resulting in a donation of over £400.
Colin said:
“Once again, the staff at Hinckley & Rugby have shown their enthusiasm and commitment to Lamp by getting involved with this year’s challenge. This past week has seen colleagues heading out for walks together during their lunch breaks, meeting up after work with their dogs and even a group Saturday morning 5K park run! We’re very proud to support the charity and of our staff for throwing themselves into the challenge to raise awareness and funds for a cause which is such a strong focus for us as a business.”
Richard Kotulecki, Lamp’s CEO added:
“I am delighted that Hinckley & Rugby Building Society has once again partnered with Lamp as the headline sponsor for the Lamp 5k challenge. Engagement with local businesses is a huge part of our work at Lamp as we continue to raise awareness of the mental health challenges people face, and of the help available to them from Lamp and from other organisations. That way, when people need the help, they know where to turn. Partnerships like this one are an essential part of doing this. As well as raising awareness and funds for Lamp, the Lamp 5K is, in itself, a useful tool for supporting mental health.
“To Hinckley & Rugby, supporting the community is much more than donations and sponsorships. They recognise that the most valuable asset is their people, with society staff members actively involved in volunteering and fundraising.”
Lamp is an independent mental health charity providing free community mental health advocacy for people living in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, as well as Carers Advocacy for people in these areas.
