The mutual society that evolved into Hinckley & Rugby Building Society was formed in 1865, making 2025 a big birthday for us. And even as we celebrate our own 160th anniversary, this is a milestone year for building societies generally, being the 250th anniversary of the world’s first building society – formed 1775 in Birmingham.
Much has changed in the last 160 years, but the core values held by Hinckley & Rugby’s founders remain the same: to support the financial wellbeing of our members and of the communities in which they live.
“We are here for you with high quality and competitive mortgage and savings products, and with the excellent personal service you have come to expect from us. And even as we embrace our past and thrive in the present, we are committed to our future. As a progressive building society, we have moved with the times – here for you whenever and however you need us, whether face to face in our branches, on the phone, or digitally.” Barry Carter, CEO
Ever modernising and innovating in the best interests of all members, Hinckley & Rugby has embraced a renewed purpose and vision to be a mutual organisation that truly reflects its members’ aims and values in today’s world. 160 years on from humble beginnings, we are committed to being a cornerstone of support for borrowers and savers far into the future.
Hinckley & Rugby has a long history of supporting its local communities through charity donations and volunteering.
This year, we aim to support even more local charities, community groups, and clubs through our Community Sponsorship Scheme. We can consider donations of up to £500 per organisation to help fund their next project or to purchase all-important new equipment.
“Our culture of giving back to the community is shared by all colleagues in our organisation, and we are committed to supporting in a variety of ways. We aim to build long-lasting relationships with community groups and charities, support grassroots organisations through our sponsorship scheme, and share our time and skills through volunteering.” Nadia Baker, Chief People Officer
In celebration of our 160th anniversary, we are holding a monthly prize draw from March to December 2025. Each month, all members who have either a savings or mortgage balance of at least £100 (in line with AGM voting requirements) will have the opportunity to win a cheque for £160.
Members do not need to do anything to take part in the monthly draw – entry is automatic. The draw will take place on the 20th of each month, and that month’s winner will be informed within five business days. See the full terms and conditions of the draw for more information.
Also in celebration of our 160th anniversary, we have launched a special 160 Day Notice account with an interest rate of 4.50% (gross / AER). Notice accounts are ideal for longer-term savings or when saving for a planned event, enabling savers to take advantage of higher interest rates when instant access to the money is not needed.
“As we look to the future, we remain committed to evolving and improving for the benefit of our members and communities. To each and every one of our members we say “Thank you” for entrusting your financial wellbeing to Hinckley & Rugby, and we look forward to supporting you and yours in the years ahead.” Chair of the Board, Nemone Wynn-Evans
