Savings. They’re what you make of them.
Whether you see your savings as a safety net or a trampoline to your dreams, a rainy day account or ‘a holiday of a lifetime’ fund, your savings are what you make of them.
Taking place during September of each year, UK Savings Week aims to help you find your way to save.
With guidance to help first time savers find a suitable account and build healthy savings habits, coupled with hints and tips for all savers, experienced or otherwise, to help you make the most of your money, there’s advice for all, no matter where you are on your savings journey.
Did you know there are around 11.5 million people in the UK who have less than £100 of savings to fall back on in an emergency1?
We want to help you so that you’re prepared to handle the unexpected. If you’re worried about money, MoneyHelper is a government-backed service that offers free and helpful advice.
Why save?
With 48% of UK adults putting aside just £1- £10 per month and 33% declaring they would be unable to make ends meet if they needed to rely on savings alone for more than one month, it appears there’s no time like the present to talk about the value and practicalities of saving2.
There’s no surprise that savings can provide peace of mind in case things go wrong, but did you know it also improves our overall wellbeing? Financial struggles are a leading cause of stress and a lack of sleep.
Stress and lack of sleep can, in turn, contribute to all manner of mental and physical health problems, therefore assessing your current situation and making a plan to contribute to your savings will likely offer considerable benefits. Even just a small amount set aside per month can hugely improve your outlook on life and enable you to feel you are doing something to improve your situation.
Are you making the most of your savings?
Ok, so you have savings, that’s great! But are they working hard for you?
According to an Opinium survey carried out for last years’ UK Savings Week, 34% of adults never compare the interest rate paid on their savings accounts3. That means over a third of savers are missing the opportunity to potentially grow their savings faster, at no cost to them.
It’s understandable – life gets in the way, other things take priority. If this sounds familiar, why not make UK Savings Week as an opportunity to take action.
