Opening a personal savings account

Once you have selected the account you wish to open, please follow the guidance below to open an account. If you would like to open a Deposit account for an Organisation, Charity or Business, please refer to our Business and Deposit accounts page for further information.

Application forms can be downloaded from the relevant product pages online, picked up in branch, or alternatively you can contact us and we will send one to you in the post.

Please note, our savings accounts are only available to UK residents. Please check the product terms for any additional conditions and information about the account you want to open.

You can apply in branch or by post

To open an account, we will require the following:

  • A personal savings account application form completed and signed by all account holders
  • Your investment either via cash or cheque. If you would like to transfer funds into your account electronically, please state this on your application form and a member of our team will be in touch once your account is open to provide you with your account number
  • Proof of identity – We use an electronic verification system to identify each account holder (over 18). If this is unsuccessful or for applicants under 18 years, we will ask for additional proof of identity

You can deliver these documents in person or by post to one of our branches and agencies.

Once your account has been opened, you will receive confirmation in the post along with your new account passbook. Your account passbook will be required to make any withdrawals and may be requested by the Society at any time.

Your account online

You may wish to register for H&R Online which allows you to view your current balance and send secure messages.

Opening an account with Power of Attorney

If you would like to open an account with Power of Attorney, or as a Nominee for a child, please refer to our Managing an account on behalf of someone else page for further information.

If you change your mind

You can close your account within 14 days of opening without notice or charge. Notify the Society and we will help you to switch accounts or reimburse your money. Signed authority must be received along with the account passbook before we are able to close the account and we will wait for any cheques to clear before we are able to return these funds. Please note that this will not apply to fixed rate accounts.

If you need any further guidance on how to open an account with the Society, please contact us using the details below.
